Alaska Dall Sheep Hunt

Dall sheep hunts are the most challenging in Alaska -- the mountains are steep and the big rams live in the rocky peaks for protection. Your Alaska Dall sheep hunting trip will take place high in the mountains of the Alaska Range.

This hunt is by far my favorite hunt to guide because of its challenges and its rewards.  You will enjoy your hunt more if you prepare yourself physically and mentally before arriving in the mountains by Super Cub.  I have had 62 and 70 year old hunters get their sheep, and a healthy 32 year old quit after the third day because he wasn’t “mentally tough.”  You have to want it.

You also have to be in shape.  Most everyone can climb the mountains at their own pace, but with a backpack and rifle on, the fun can be taken out of it.  If you can commit to hiking a few times a week with a backpack on before this hunt, you will enjoy every day in the mountains.

In addition to the equipment you will need to bring on the Hunter's Gear List, you will need a few special items for a Dall sheep hunt.  Tough comfortable boots are at the top of the list of important gear as the rocks can shred bargain boots.  We will definitely cross some streams, so some type of lightweight waterproof over boot, or plastic mountaineering boots with glacier socks is a must. Buy this equipment early while the gear stores are well-stocked so you can wear it and break it in.

This is a backpack hunt, so freeze-dried food is the main staple in camp.  The tents are small, light, professional quality backpack tents. Your sleeping bag should be light and compressable.

Dall sheep are a pushover if you put the bullet in the right spot.  Being comfortable with your rifle and hitting where you aim is more important than having a magic caliber. Shots are only as long as your marksmanship skills allow -- I have taken trophy sheep at 15 yards, too.  Bow hunting and primitive weapons are also viable alternatives.

This hunt can be combined with a grizzly bear hunt and together make up one of the most challenging and rewarding hunting experiences of a lifetime.
